Photograph of Queen on Dutch TV in 1974
This photograph was taken following rehearsals for a performance of ‘Killer Queen’ on TopPop, a Dutch TV show on 22 November 1974. It was obviously a mimed performance as there are no leads on the guitars, and neither are there any microphones on Roger’s drum kit. Only Freddie’s microphone had a lead (for the sake of stagecraft no doubt). It must’ve been a hastily arranged TV slot too and it is particularly striking that none of the band were playing their regular instruments.
TopPop was a famous television show in the Netherlands in the 1970s and 1980s. This was the Dutch equivalent of Britain’s Top of the Pops. Top of the Pops had been vital to Queen, and their performance of Seven Seas Of Rhye on the show had helped launch their career in the UK. So it was in the Netherlands too and following the performance of “Killer Queen” on TopPop in 1974 the single raced up the Dutch charts, peaking at number three.
