Silver Spoon Ring

Stylish silver ring made by upcycling a silver spoon, handmade in Uppingham by Mark Evans. Gift box included.

Originally made and hallmarked in Sheffield in 1918, this ring bears the maker’s mark for James Dixon & Sons Ltd. They used to have a factory at Cornish Place in Sheffield.

The outer section is marked with an ornate pattern with a tapered section of polished silver in the middle.

Mark uses his silversmithing skills learnt in the 1970’s to create rings using ornate silver spoons. He selects a variety of different silver spoons which have the right thickness of silver to form into a ring. If the silver is too thin or too thick, it won’t work.

Firstly the bowl is cut off then the handle is heated until it glows red hot. This softens the silver and allows it to become soft enough to bend. After bending the metal becomes hard again, so it has to be reheated and softened again. This process is known as annealing. The silver is annealed several times until the piece finally takes shape. The ring is then placed in a warm pot of safety pickle to safely remove any fire stain caused during annealing. A tapered steel mandrel is used to form the final shape, together with a leather mallet to prevent marking the silver. The final tasks are to polish the ring carefully so that no details are lost and then clean it in an ultrasonic machine.

Each ring is unique. The ring is left open so that it can be adjusted slightly to make  it larger or smaller.
